This beautiful town is home to the oldest working planetarium in the world, a masterpiece now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This extraordinary moving model of the solar system was built between 1774 and 1781 by Eise Eisinga, a Frisian wool comber, and is ingeniously suspended from the ceiling of his living room in a charming canal house. Witnessing its precise workings is nothing short of mind-boggling! But Franeker offers more than just the planetarium.
