Wieuwerd is a small village in the midst of the green countryside of the province of Friesland. Its historic Nicolaaskerk (St. Nicholas Church) is one of the prettiest you will ever see. However, there’s a mystery here that puzzles scientists up to this day. In the 18th century, villagers uncovered several remarkably well preserved mummified bodies in the church’s crypt. What makes these mummies extraordinary is that their preservation occurred naturally. Yet, nobody knows how this could have happened. You can view the mummies up close in the crypt where they are buried. The space is small and dimly lit, enhancing the sense of mystery. Giethoorn
